# Estonian Mafia

                                                              President Toomas Hendrik Ilves

So what is this Estonian Maffia that everyone's been talking about lately? Is it really something illegal with an Al Pacino character on board?

No, it's not related to the Godfather sountrack after all. Estonian maffia really just means their startups. And, boy, do Estonians know how to make themselves famous in business!
Some estimation notes that Estonia has the most start-ups per person in the world, despite having a humble number of inhabitants.
It comes of no surprise that Estonia's doing very well lately, especially compared to its Southern neighbors and this is backed by the report stating Estonia's rank as 21st out of 120 countries in start-ups in the global index.
According to Transparency International Corruption Perception Index 2013, Estonia is in the 28th position out of 177, and the Economic Freedom Ranking gives them the 11th position out of the 178 countries. As well. Estonia ranks as No. 1 in the CEE rankings in terms of both.

Some of the famous Estonian start-ups include : Skype (well, of course), Taxify (taxi app), Lingvist (language learning), Fortumo (mobile payments) and many others.

Estonia is particularly strong in the IT and Tech related fields of start-ups due to many factors including high skilled labor,  pro-tech president's Toomas Hendrik Ilves influence and technical  education possibilities from the kindergarten!
So the next time you see a cool app getting viral - check who's behind it. Might be mafia.
